Journalists are not above the law and have to pick up their dog poop!

January 13, 2007

Sometimes journalists get so carried away with the fact that celebrities, politicians and slum dwellers (in this case) get away with breaking the law that they mistakenly believe that they too are above the law.

tavleen-singh_1_1.JPGWhy, just last week Tavleen Singh, a columnist with the Indian Express allowed her dog to poop on Marine Drive…and lo behold she was caught by the police! She refused to pay the Rs 500/- fine and also refused to pick up the dog poop. Her defence is that slum-dwellers shit on the road and stray dogs shit all over Mumbai so why should she pay? Another complaint she had was that proper bins to dispose of the shit were not available (like they are in New York). And she also admitted that she allows her dog to spoil Marine Drive on a regular basis.

Unluckily for her the Mumbai muncipality is not taking this lightly. There are plans to book her under section 186 of the Indian Penal Code which deals with the obstruction of a public servant on duty – a cognisable offence. Well, certainly Singh needs to understand that she is misusing her power as a journalist.

But if an intellectual like her is blinded by ego and cannot see the unreasonableness of her position, what can one expect from celebrities and politicians?

she’s writes abt morals and ethics and herself is not used to practising it…some people think they are above law, and get away with anything…

This made me smile. Why doesn’t she just let her dog shit on her own doorstep? Then she wouldn’t have to pay anything, and she would be taking responsiblity for her actions or should I say the dogs motions!

She made a poo-poo when she admitted letting her dog plop on a regular basis, because surely now, it will be a case of I spy Singh!

She better keep that cheque book handy! Or, just set up a direct debit!

Tavleen Singh well I don like her. She cms across as a typical ‘Snooty I know All Journo’ type & she talks about rights & “Issues” all the time. She should follow what she preaches.

Municipal Corporation of Mumbai is trying its level best to keep the City cleen. We know that there is lot to be done, but if every citizen contributes its little bit, we hope to achieve the goal of clean Mumbai.
Pl. do not listen to your madam and dirty Marine Drive again, and request her to pay the fine.

I have a suggestion: Ms. Tavleen Singh should join the slums so she too can poop in the open and the police would not catch her or punish her.
Tavleen Singh, an ‘intellectual’ does not understand the reasons for the slum dwellers doing what they do. It is the State that has failed. It is the politicians and the officials who create the slums without the requisite essential facilities. If Tavleen Singh so desires, I can foward her an research paper on how slums are created in Pune and what the stakes are.
It is shocking that a person of Tavleen Singh’s ‘stature’ can stoop to these lows.

I am not a big fan of Tavleen Singh, but come on Nita, her logic is flawless. She just wanted to connect with the “Aam Junta”.

If a Street Dog can poop on the Road, so can her dog and she is right. You know what, if a Slum Dweller can poop on the beech/road so can she.

She doesn’t have a ego at all, she’s just writes about the power crazy, egomaniac and self-centered people like her so she has to live like them.

As I said not a big fan 😉

Nor am I. She comes across as a know-all and an egoist and I don’t like people like that. Plus as I mentioned earlier, she sent an abusive two line comment to this post, attacking me personally, which I had to delete. Also, a noted blogger (I think he knows her) send me a five sentence extremely abusive comment. I had to delete that, and then he simply changed his name and sent another similar comment. This time he called himself “Kaluram!” Fool that he was, this “educated” person, he forgot to send it from a different computer. And he was an educated, professor type, an Indian based in the US.
People with no intellectual argument tend to abuse.

@Nita: Tavleen Singh sent you an abusive message? Well, you should have let it stay! I mean it isn’t often that you can prove to the world how educated some of our media personnel are!

DD, I was just a few months into blogging then! I was so shocked and hurt. I guess you are right, I wish it was there for others to see how she had trashed me as a person.

lol! Just came across this from the link on your Dark Side of the Internet post…yes, I too, wish you’d kept the Tavleen Singh comment on here for us to have a good laugh at!

Our media is full of obnoxious know-it-alls who feed off their dumb fans…sounds like the “professor” / NRI useless chap here. I’m not at all surprised at the Satyam fiasco – we sadly are a nation of ***lickers (sorry but there’s no better word!) and feed the supposedly “big guys” even when they prove to be worthless, no?
