The song Pyar Kiya to Darna Kya from Mughal E Azam

April 27, 2007

The song from Mughal E Azam – Pyar Kiya To Darna Kya. The closest English translation is: Why be afraid of being in love?

Just a couple of days ago I wrote about how old films showed women with spirit and courage. This song embodies it. Anarkali, played by the actress Madhubala, is a courtesan and initially out of fear makes a deal/compromise with her lover’s father (the King) but then when the prince scorns her lack of courage, she decides to defy the king and celebrate her love. This song showcases that…her action shocks Dilip Kumar (the prince) but she wins back his love.

    Hello,
Nice blog. Am a Nigerian who is totally and completely hooked on Bollywood. Sent in an application to intern with Dharma Productions and Yashraj films two years in a row and have never got any replies either to my emails or to the two mail packages I sent.
What advice will you give to get my foot in the door?
What is the reception of black people in the industry. I am not stupid to think I am going to be in a movie but in production?

Baraje, there is no way that a Nigerian has a chance in the industry. You need to be a local person or at least be able to speak Hindi fluently otherwise its very difficult. In any case there are a lot of techies here too so its not as if there is a shortage of production people. I’ll tell you one thing. Getting a break in Bollywood is very difficult even for local people. That is because everyone wants to get in because of the glamour factor and finally knowing someone is important. I know talented people who have been struggling for years to get into Bollywood. Its a mafia in that sense!

i think the closest translation is: what is there to fear when you have loved?

this also makes more sense in the context. anarkali doens’t need to fear being punished or killed because she has loved truly and that is all that counts.

“why be afraid of being in love” would be probably something like: pyar karne se kya darna hai.
