Summary Posts of the past week

May 17, 2008

The end of another hectic week. Before I start with the summary posts there are two things I need to mention. One is that this week Paul was kind enough to award me the Sun Mountain award. Paul has an excellent blog where he discusses in an analytical and intelligent manner issues close to his heart. He is also involved in the blogging world ( I don’t know anyone this involved) and is a very very thoughtful blogger. That is why I am awarding him the Thoughtful Blogger Award, which was awarded to me by Axinia.

Thoughtful Blogger

Now to the summary posts of the week.

India isn’t eating too much I thought the controversial issue of Bush and Rice “accusing” India and China of pushing up world food prices (because now we can afford to buy good food!!) would have blown over by now…but the controversy seems to have embarrassed America…IHT, a reputed American publication has been highly critical of Bush’s statements..Developing nations like China and India have long been blamed for everything from the rising cost of commodities to global warming, because they are consuming more goods and fuels than ever before…

Why weren’t large mammals exterminated in India like they were in many parts of the world? America once had its share of elephants and lions…and more. Australia and New Zealand had huge mammals too…gigantic flightless birds and reptiles. They’ve all gone now. Exterminated by pre-historic humans. So if we in India are slowly killing off our tigers at least we can take some kind of twisted comfort in the fact that we are doing exactly what human beings down the ages did …exterminate species. They did it then and we are doing it now…

Extreme Internet Censorship isolates a country Internet censorship exists in varying degrees all over the world. In some countries like the United Kingdom, Canada, and a considerable number of Western European countries, it’s negligible and the government encourages the internet industry to self-regulate and also asks users themselves to use “filtering/blocking technologies’ to block objectionable content. In other words, the internet is not really policed by the government. But some countries like Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, North Korea, China and Vietnam have a high degree of internet control by the government. India falls somewhere inbetween…

Education Cess and Petrol Cess – where’s the money going? All of us need to be alert to the fact that the cess being collected from us might not be being properly utilized. The Daily Pioneer was forced to conduct an investigation… Its disheartening to know that the government’s contribution to education expenditure (minus the cess which is our money) has decreased. This means that government is diverting the money it was earlier spending on education to something else! Sure, there is nothing illegal in that…

Speed Racer – Movie Review Speed Racer is a cinematic cocktail of Science Fiction, Action Adventure and Fantasy…so despite the fact that neither Racing nor Cars do much for me, the movie struck a chord. Not only because I love those genres, or because the movie is a visual treat and one of the most entertaining movies I have seen in recent times, but also because it made me feel something. Not many Hollywood movies do that for me but two things in this movie get you all emotional. One is the…

Do children affect the health of a marriage? Why should children affect a couple’s marriage either negatively or positively? Surely the success of a marriage depends on the relationship between the couple? And whether a couple’s marriage is affected by the presence or the absence of kids would also depend on the couple’s individual preference (for children)…and this would vary not just with individuals but also different societies and cultures…couples who want kids badly could feel incomplete as a family/couple without them, and this feeling of inadequacy could well drive a wedge between them particularly if one blames the other…

    Nita, my heartfelt congrtulations!!!

Now ler me use this post to quote my own post I wrote about yourself🙂 Most of the readers know the facts below, but it may be also intresting for your guests:

    —————————————

My favorite blogger is …… Nita Writer! Now let me explain the reasons this person and her great blog get my admiration and high appreciation:

she is a journalist and her approach is to show the best and the worst of her subject – India

she has a good style which is easy to read, her articles are long enough (but not too long!), very well researched and always up-to-date

she posts EVERY DAY (hats off!) and such a good stuff…

she takes good natural pictures that illustrate and support her words

she gets a huge number of comments, and what kind of comments! – one can see that people take her articles seriously and love to discuss the topics which are always captivating and eye-opening

she answers all the comments (!)

she actually has her own daily newspaper (this is my perception of her blog)

she LIVES the idea of blogging – creating great content for free, making people think about different important issues and thus making the difference

she dedicates lots of time, effort and love to her wonderful blog

she is my personal star on the blogging horizon

hope you dont mind this humble quotaiton😉

Great posts this week Nita and I really like like your weekend summary.

Congrats on the page rank although I have a beef with Google about how easy it is for your blog content to be stolen and how hard it is to get removed.

thanks Vivek. if I went commercial I guess I could make money but somehow at this time at least I want to provide the blog free. There are many reasons for that and not the least is that I get tremendous mental satisfaction from writing this blog and I don’t know if I will get it if I have a financial reason.
Ankur, if I get my own domain I’ll lose my page rank.🙂 I know I will be able to build it up again but there’s no need as of now I don’t have commercial ambitions.
Axinia, thanks, its really very sweet of you to write those words here on my blog.
Brian, thanks. Yes its really irritating isn’t it when someone steals and google just sits back and does nothing? I regularly have people from blogspot stealing my posts, just had one a couple of days ago and even though I have flagged the blog and complained, my posts have not yet been removed.I am not sure why they are so lethargic on this aspect….this is the fifth time that a blogger from blogspot has stolen my content. I have never had a problem with wordpress.

Buy a domain mapping thingy from WP.com, while WP will do the all redirection and stuff of everything coming to your original blog to the new domain name, in next crawling the search engines will put the same PR(the one you currently have) on the new domain. Then incase you are interested, you can move to self-hosted blog without any problems.

Considering, the traffic etc on your blog, you might get a flat rate for ads on your blog, rather then pay per click etc. Another thing you can try is, put ads in your feeds that can be done through feedburner easily without any hassles, for that you have to burn feed and tell people to change their feed address. Also, you will have much more control of your feed then.

Personally, even I don’t like ads on my blog, but yeah I mite sometime experiment with ads in feeds or something else.

Sometimes I end up typing nitawriter.com instead of nw.wp.com as URL only to get “Server not found” error.

Anshul, thanks for that info. I knew that if I take a domain mapping thingie as you call it WP will do the redirection but I am not sure whether you are right about the PR and there is also the technorati ranking. I will lose all that and I really wonder if its worth it specially as I am not crazy for ads. If wordpress allows me ads (on payment to them ofcourse) then I can definitely consider it, but I admit I have never thought of it seriously. Also I have no idea what you mean by burn feed myself and in any case I have no intention of telling people to change their feed address. Its too much of a problem for them. But I really appreciate you telling me all this. I am a very non-techy person and have learnt everything very slowly and by myself and I do not feel confident even to try and get a CSS upgrade! I have discussed this with Ruhi and she explained it to me but I still don’t feel confident about CSS. At the end of it all I am a writer and I realise I cannot do it all. I want to concentrate on writing – Nita.

NIta, you say “I regularly have people from blogspot stealing my posts, ” – but how do you find it out? Is there any pingback or you search for it on purpose?

Axinia, you see that copyscape emblem on my blog? Well, just go to copyscape and they find out for you!- Nita
