About me

Hi, I’m Nita. All my life I have been struggling to be the perfect mother and the perfect writer.nita-water-colour-2_1_1.jpg
Wrote my first novella – an adventure story of The Secret Three! – when I was eleven. My first screenplay for my favourite TV show The Invaders and The Mod Squad (we were in Nigeria then) at 13. Kept a detailed journal from the age of nine to the age of twenty-six. Have a trunkfull of the stuff now. Plan to publish parts of it one day. Kept writing stories and novellas…but finally, after studying English Literature (at graduation level) and picking up a degree in Marketing (post-graduation level) landed up in advertising. Childhood over.

When I had two little girls within a gap of four years I decided to concentrate on them. Motherhood for me was fulfilling, satisfying and enjoyable. Though I read a lot during those early years I started writing again only when the younger one was two. I started off with ‘middles’ in newspapers about my experiences as a mother and then started to free-lance with the Times of India, Deccan Herald, The Telegraph, and The Statesman. I wrote on a wide variety of subjects. Also, ran around for NIE (Newspaper in Education) where I worked with the Times of India. Here I worked with children, showing them how to get the most from their daily newspaper. I enjoyed every minute of it.

Life became a mad rush as I became a stringer for Eve’s and then in Calcutta, for The Telegraph. Published dozens of middles, several short stories for children. I also contributed other feature articles for the childrens page. It was fun.

When my younger daughter entered the sixth grade I decided to go full-time. I worked for the Advertising &Marketing magazine, the Economic Times, Mumbai, and Business Today. Didn’t like it much and so gave it up.

I am back to free-lancing. If you want to check my (already) published articles, then I suggest you look at the archives of the first three months. I have not categorised all (category link above) as I have just started to categorise, starting from September 06. After the first few months I more or less stopped uploading my published pieces as many were outdated, and started writing pieces exclusively for this blog.

I am also working on a novel.

I am also a serious palmist and have been at it for the last 30 years. I started in school. I do not read the future because just like in that movie Back To The Future I believe that the future changes as we change. I read the inner being behind the palm (sometimes we ourselves do not know what motivates us to behave in a certain way) and there are certain probable futures that we all have. I read palms from high quality digital prints so that I can study the print at leisure. My clients are mostly my daughters’ friends and friends of friends and relatives’ friends. I do take money, but for friends its free.

I have taught English to poor children as it gave me a thrill. Today, due to certain circumstances I don’t do this, but plan to start again.

Most of the day ofcourse I write, write, re-write. Read a palm or two. Cook. Read books. My favourite as a genre are thrillers ofcourse. I have a particular fondness for Science Fiction. When it comes to individual books, there are many, many…

I love to spend time with my two grown-up daughters, one of whom is studying to be a designer. The second is studying psychology.

Then there’s my husband. He is my best friend and my soul-mate.

If you wish to write to me you can write to me at:

    Hi Nita,

Have added your blog to my blogroll some time back, but really had the time to browse through it much more only today. Count me as one of your regular readers from now on. And I hope you don’t give up blogging here!

Thanks deepseas. I won’t give up blogging as I love it and I love all my readers too! The only problem is that I have just shifted house, and a lot of my professional assignments are also pending and therefore temporarily I am giving less time to my blog. I will be posting at least twice a week though it may not be on fixed days. I have also reduced my reading of blogs and I hope I will be able to catch up on that soon too! I love reading blogs too but for me that is pure pleasure and relaxation and at present I have no time. The best part is that I have lost 2 kilos in the last two weeks! 🙂

you lost 2 kilos in last 2 weeks!

    great! how?

By being on my feet whole day, first packing and then unpacking! Running around doing errands, getting things fixed in the house etc. Yesterday and today I was out of town (just back) as I had various deposits maturing in Pune and I was rushing around doing that today! Right now am exhausted and wonder if I should write about my harrowing expereince at the post office! Maybe I will! – Nita.

    Nita,

I was tracing the entire thread of this post, and I really liked seeing that it was accolades all the way.

You are a very participative blogger and your encouragement and participation makes us feel good.

Forgive us if we sometimes say things you may not like..

Everything is okay by me Milind except personal remarks against me. I don’t mind someone arguing against an argument I have made but anyone trying to drag me personally into it gets my goat! I must say you have been a most gentlemanly commentator here! I guess people like you and me, who write under their own (full) names usually are!

    Hi Nita,

I came across your blog while searching something on advertising.

I am a software engineer by degree and having worked in the field got a chance to get into copy writing. I have been writing poems since a tender age and started experimenting with different forms of writing later. Now with a few months into copy writing in Jaipur i don’t know how to proceed further and what to aim for.

I would appreciate if you could guide me.

    Hello Madam,

Its a pleasure visiting your blog and an honour for the readers to whom you have given your email id to write directly to you……hardly does a writer of this stature leave his/her contact detail ….

I read it in your profile,”I have taught English to poor children as it gave me a thrill. Today, due to certain circumstances I don’t do this, but plan to start again.” and then dropped you a mail ….i shall be obliged if i get even a one-liner reply for the same.

Wish you and your entire family a very happy new year 2010 ahead

I just came across your blogs and I think it’s absolutely amazing that you are sharing your love and amazing writing with everyone. I am extremely passionate about some of the subjects you had dealt with in your blog and I’d like to find out if there are ways to inform women in India about the dark side of surrogacy and complication from western perspective. I feel so strongly about stopping these atrocious acts and helping these poor indian women from being exploited.

From India, there are a lot of NGO’s in India working towards social awareness and upliftment. You can direct your energy or money towards setting up one if you live in India or work through the ones already existing. Also policies in India need to be changed to ban surrogacy. Public interest litigations can help. – Nita

    Hi nita,
what a shame,I came across your blog when you stopped writing on it.
I am immensely impressed by the clarity of thought, variety of subjects and your understanding of situations. Not only your articles but your comments as well are very interesting to read.Prior to visiting your blog,I never used to read the comment section so keenly. But in your blog, the way you have answered the replies to the comments(kind of interactive blog, may I say?)makes me feel ‘checking out’
    comment sections of other blogs.
Once again thanks for inspiring me to write(otherwise I was a closet writer).

I have stopped replying to comments but your comment made me feel like replying. What I want to say is that I am sorry too and when I receive a message like yours I feel this keenly. I had to stop, for the simple reason is that I did not want to live a virtual life. That was all I was doing, writing this blog, and well it wasn’t doing me as a person any good. Not in my real life. All the best for your writing. – Nita
