Summary Post of the past week

October 4, 2008

These are the five posts I wrote last week. I will not be posting for a couple of days (including Monday) as I will be traveling. Hope to post on Tuesday.

India’s rising defence expenditure is not too high if compared to that of other countries There are indications that India might double its defense budget…We might overtake Britain in the next five years. Today our expenditure is low if compares it to our GDP…Another way to see Defence expenditure in perspective is to see how much money goes into defense spending as compared to other spending. These are the defense spends in percentage terms…here is the expenditure in real terms from a study…Even democratic countries are known to be devious when it comes to revealing their defense budgets and it’s worse in the case of other regimes..To achieve the balance between genuine requirements and getting into a race can be decided by comparing the defense budgets of the world (in real and percentage terms) and evaluating threat perception…

Drona – movie review Drona makes an impact for several reasons. It has taken an idea from Indian mythology and transformed it into a magical special effects extravaganza. Goldie Behl, writer (alongwith Jaydeep Sarkar) and director, has written an original story, but what makes this movie one of a kind are the visual effects…Overall though, this movie disappoints. The screenplay is loose in places, there are too many songs, acting is mostly average, and the music lacklustre…

The public smoking ban should not go up in smoke It was always people like us (who objected to smokers) who were wrong. Smokers’ rights had to be protected, not ours. A friend will oblige if you request him/her not to smoke, but with strangers one cannot say…Comprehensive studies abroad have shown that it doesn’t affect business as more non-smokers start going to hotels (although other, smaller studies contradict these findings), but this may not happen in India…What I don’t understand is why people are reacting with so much anger to this ban…it is a fact that one fifth of all Indians smoke…one in every 10 deaths in India from 2010 would be smoking-related…the country loses Rs.36,000 crore (Rs.360 billion) due to health problems…

Getting your due without sucking up (HowTo post) You want to impress your boss. You are hard working, smart and intelligent but the other guy got the promotion. The problem is that your boss doesn’t know how good you really are. You are convinced that it’s because you can’t suck up. But couldn’t it also be possible that you are doing something wrong…

India’s Retail troubles EMIs have gone up, inflation has hit, the stock markets are depressed, companies aren’t giving the promised raises and there is a global financial crises. Footfalls at malls have reduced and sales are down. Organised retail is in trouble. If people go to malls, it’s to pick up stuff at discounts, hang out, catch a movie or a bite. Examples of the retail shock…but no, it’s not a doomsday scenario…The unprofitable, badly thought out and badly placed stores and malls are starting to die out. A period of consolidation and mergers is on the anvil…The good news comes from…

Hues of Life tagged me to light a candle for the victims of terrorism…I am lighting it not just for the victims of terrorism but also for victims of mob attacks.

I’m wondering how can you work so quickly … amazing, considering the quality.

I am lighting it not just for the victims of terrorism but also for victims of mob attacks.

That takes a real humanitarian person like you to say it. 🙂 I also pray for those Hindus, Muslims and Christians who have died in the riots, because most of those riots were organized by those who wanted to reap political benefits and sacrifice the ordinary citizens in the course.

I add my prayers to yours. May we find peace and harmony.
